Benefits of Summer Enrichment
HYSP scholars spend each summer scattered all over the country and the world, engaged in service activities and research projects of the most diverse kinds. For summer experiences to be a genuine source of learning and a broadening of horizons, they require diligent preparation, careful planning, and thoughtful follow-up. With ongoing support from HYSP, scholars also benefit from the generous assistance and guidance provided by the faculty members of various academic departments and by experts at the University’s study centers and research institutes. The new insights and valuable lessons our scholars acquire from their summer projects and experiences enrich the program as a whole by generating sustained discussions and deeper inquiry among the entire HYSP community (and beyond) on some of the major issues confronting contemporary society both domestically and internationally.

The Value of Civic Engagement
Since its inception, HYSP has sought to reinforce its scholars’ declared commitment to civic engagement. Each year, our scholars waste no time acquainting themselves with local organizations and institutions. Within weeks of their arrival on campus they are volunteering at South Bend’s Center for the Homeless and women’s shelters, clinics, hospitals, and neighborhood centers in the area. In recent years alone, HYSP scholars have run a non-violence program as well as a music school for the homeless, interned in the mayor’s office, helped operate a food co-op in a lower-income neighborhood with little access to grocery stores, tutored numerous children in after-school programs at various centers, assisted in the provision of services at health clinics for the indigent, and volunteered with well-known organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Red Cross. Our scholars have worked to improve the efficiency of South Bend’s water system, and pursued their passion for entrepreneurship with local consulting firms. They have also played a vital role in launching, managing, and operating The Jubilee Initiative for Financial Inclusion (JIFFI), a non-profit community financial services provider aimed at offering an alternative to predatory payday lending through cash advances and assistance in financial planning. On campus, our scholars have presented TEDxUND talks, established student clubs including PrismND and DreamCatchers, and founded and executive produced Show Some Skin.
Post-Graduate Achievements
The summer experiences and projects required by HYSP enable our scholars to discern as well as prepare for their careers and long-term goals. A good number of them (across academic disciplines) enter the business world in various capacities at some of the nation’s most prestigious firms, such as McKinsey & Company, IBM, J.P. Morgan Chase, Bain & Company, Boston Consulting Group, and Ernst & Young. Others are continuing post-graduate studies at major universities, including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Oxford, and Georgetown, and at Johns Hopkins and Stanford medical schools. Regardless of their ultimate path, the search for knowledge, social consciousness, imagination, and resourcefulness distinguish HYSP scholars and contribute to their quest toward transformational leadership.
National Fellowships and Scholarships
In addition to the Rhodes, Truman, Yenching, Boren and Gilman Scholarships, our scholars have won various Fulbright Awards, including the Research Grant, Language Teaching Assistantship and U.S.-U.K. Summer Institute Grant.
